Fabs Versus Natural Animals

Watch the video below.

  1. What sort of animal do you think this is? (Give both the scientific name and the common name).
  2. Describe what the animal looks like.  If it were a fab, then what creatures could have it been "fabricated" or engineered from?
  3. Read this fact sheet.
    • This animal was not a mammal. What was it?
    • How much did adults weigh?  How tall was the animal?
    • What did they eat?
    • Why were they outlawed and hunted?
    • Do you believe they are extinct forever?  How could they bring them back?

Character Analysis of....

Pick a character from Leviathan.  In 2 paragraphs (6 - 8 complete sentences per paragraph) you are to describe what your character looks like (their physical appearance) and what their personality is like (character traits).  In paragraph one, concentrate on their physical appearance and focus on the following:

  1. Height.
  2. Colour of hair, eyes, skin.
  3. Build (slim, medium, heavy, muscular?).
  4. Eyes - intelligent, hawkish, angry, frightening etc...
  5. Face - does it have a naturally happy look, sad, angry, alert, closed (hard to read).
  6. How do they move - awkwardly, athletically, gracefully...
In paragraph two, focus on their personality and character traits. Think about the following:

  1. Personality: would you like to be friends with them? Why? Why not?
  2. Humour: Do they have sense of humour?  What is it like?  Would they think you were funny?  Why or why not?
  3. Temperament: are they upbeat, lighthearted, or serious and easily offended?
Check out the character traits link above for ideas about personality.

You must use the COPS and complete sentences...Don't answer this in question format; do write it in paragraph format.

  4. Coding...

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

Answer the following questions using all 5 dressups in Microsoft Word. You should use complete sentences, paragraph format, and it should be COPSd. Use Word Talk to check your work before posting.  You may use the internet (Google) to help you with some these answers*. (Key words: Leviathan, Scott Westerfeld)

  1. What is happening in this scene from the book?  What is the machine called, and which side in the "Great War" does it belong to?*  What does it do? Who is getting into it?  Why?
  2. Do you believe that Prince Alek's teachers are helping him or hijacking him?  Why? GIVE EVIDENCE that you think supports your opinion from the story.
  3. What famous composer was supposedly woken up in the middle of the night and taught musical lessons?* Find out when and where he was born, how old he was when he died, and when he composed his first symphony.*

The Giver - How Does It End?

Re-read pp 174 to 179 on etext The Giver or, if you have a book, read pages 177-180.

The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.

1)Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.

    Or

2)Perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.  Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.

Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
    1. Which interpretation do you think is correct?
    2. Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your interpretation of what happened from the last chapter. Give page numbers.  (You can paraphrase).
    3. Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence.  Give the page number of the quote.
    4. What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
    5. What fun memories do you intend to make for yourself before you are "released"?
Do this is MS WORD.  Use WORD TALK to proof read your answer BEFORE you post it.
