  1. 1 I think that the court martial was unfair and they should have allowed tommo to come and be a witness for the trial. The reason I think this is that if his army group was still there that they would let one of them be a witness.

  2. In my opinion, I don’t think it was fair how Charlie got court martialed because all he wanted to do was protect Tommo from Sergeant Hanley.

  3. I agree and disagree at the same time. I agree is court martial was fair because he said that they would come when it gets dark. They did come when it was dark but I feel Sergeant Henley thought it was a little too late. The reason I do not think it was fair was because family comes first. Luckily Tommo survived because if he didn’t survive Tommo would not be able to keep his promise. The reason I don’t think it’s fair, is because think about it if you were in war and your brother/sister got shot in the head would you go out and fight or would you stay and help him/her. Another reason I think it’s unfair is Charlie did not do anything wrong. He did not disobey anyone.

  4. In my opinion, Charlie’s court martial is unfair. Unfairly, because he was protecting his brother and had a good reason, also because Tommo couldn’t walk, run or stand. If it was Sargent Hanley’s brother I’m sure he would stay behind also Charlie and Tommo weren’t exactly disobeying him because they were going to head to the trench at night. Charlie didn’t deserve to die.

  5. No I do not think that Charlie’s court martial was fair because they did not even look into getting any real key witnesses. They do have a point too, because Charlie got an order from Handley and did not listen. Although, Charlie had a very good point when he said that fighting back would be suicide and the Germans where just waiting for them to come out.

  6. Personally, I think it is an unfair court martial. Since a soldier was wounded, in no man’s land it should not be a court martial. So no I don’t think it should be.

  7. Charlies court martial is unfair. Although, Charlies court martial pretty much has to say Charlies guilty he should at least listen to Charlie and let someone be his witness. Personally, I think if I were Charlie I would have done the same thing and stayed with my brother and not listen to sergeant Hanley to go on a suicidal order. I think it wasn’t fair because Charlie had two reasons one it was a suicidal order and two he had to stay with his brother. I would do the same thing as Charlie I would be proud I stayed with my brother but the court martial should give Charlie a chance to speak. Charlie should not have been killed he has a family and was fighting for his country and trying to tell his sergeant that he doesn’t think his order is safe.

  8. In my opinion, I think it’s unfair because one he was protecting his brother and two he should be promoted for heroic actions and the third is sergeant Hanley was there and Hanley hates Charlie so he would kind of lie so he gets the firing squad.

Never leave a man behind, is what a lot of people will say in the war and Charlie was doing just that not leaving his brother behind. Charlie’s court martial was unfair. Continuously, soldiers get court martialed and die no matter what the case was. In Charlie’s case he shouldn’t have died because Hanley was giving a suicidal order and abandoning one of his soldiers. All Charlie was doing was politely standing up to Hanley and saying he wasn’t going to leave his brother behind which was a good act of loyalty toward his company, but since Hanley is a cruel and mean person he demanded a court martial upon Charlie. Also since Hanley is a Sargent the court martial wasn’t even necessary because no matter what happened (other than Hanley dying before the court martial) Charlie would have died anyway, which in my opinion is completely unfair.

  11. 1. In my opinion, Charlie’s court martial is fair and unfair. Here is why I think it is unfair. When Charlie stayed back, he was only doing it to protect his brother from something else dangerous, like another shell. Here is how I think it is fair. If they said it was fine, then maybe more soldiers would also stay behind and disobey, and then the team would fall apart, and the Germans would win. Therefore, Charlie deserved to die, but he also didn’t deserve to die.

  12. Was Charlie’s execution fair? I personally don’t think it was, despite Charlie disobeying Sergeant Hanley’s orders. Surely, they could’ve let Charlie call on a few witnesses. Even though all the witnesses couldn’t be called on for one reason or another, Charlie should’ve been allowed to call on at least one person. I don’t think Sergeant Hanley even had a proper reason to file a court martial! If I were the judge, I probably would’ve said something like this, “So, you’re filing a court martial on this man because he disobeyed your order, which killed many people just so he could care for his extremely injured brother? Come back when he’s actually done something terrible.” I might not say something exactly like that, but honestly, where did they even get that terrible sergeant?
Now, there are always two sides to a story. Here’s reasons why Charlie’s execution was sort of fair. Charlie disobeyed Sergeant Hanley. Sure, not so bad considering he stayed with his injured brother, but he did disobey him. Sure, I was going on and on about how Charlie disobeyed Sergeant Hanley for a reason, but Tommo got better without Charlie. If Charlie obeyed Sergeant Hanley, he could’ve still been alive. Or he could’ve died, which wouldn’t make much of a difference.
Overall, I think Charlie’s execution was unfair. Even though I agree with some of the judge’s decision.

  13. 1. Charlies court martial was unfair in my opinion because if he disobeyed his orders for that reason he shouldn’t be shot and killed also they should have gave Charlie a longer time cover himself for what he had done and they should’ve let more people be witnesses so he could not be killed that is why I think Charlies court martial was unfair.Jaeger

  14. I do not think Charlie’s court martial was fair because they refused to get any key witnesses besides Handley. Although they did have a point when they said that Charlie disobeyed Handley’s order. Charlie said that going out to fight the Germans would be suicide, I thought he had a very good point.

  15. 1. Personally, think Charlie’s court martial isn’t fair. Although Charlie didn’t obey orders, it’s still not fair that Tommo can’t be a witness because he’s his brother.

  16. 1. I think Charlie’s court martial is fair, but unfair because all those other men shouldn’t die and then Charlie doesn’t get killed. But I think it is not fair because there killing people for no super important reason .basically their taking people from their cities training them and if they don’t meet their standards their killing them. Personally they should have tryouts for the army so they don’t kill innocent people and the soldiers need to sleep sometimes because if they don’t get enough sleep they can die and they’ll lose their tons of soldiers it’s also possible they’ll lose the war. Put your feet in their place how would you react if someone basically told you to surrender, kill yourself and you have a 50% chance of surviving. Then you survive and you don’t have someone to be a witness in court with you because they don’t let your brother be a witness and everyone else has died.

  17. 1. In my opinion, Charlie’s court martial is unfair because he was trying to protect his brother from Sargent Hanley and I think that Charlie felt mad for Tommo because he got shot in the head by the another team an at the end Charlie don’t deserve to die because he did love his brother Tommo and Tommo loved him too, but it was sad to hear Charlie die.

  18. I think the court martial is unfair. In the war, Tommo got a bad wound on his head and couldn’t move so Charlie stayed with him but Charlie had disobeyed the crenels orders. Sadly, the punishment was death. When the day came Charlie was happy. Charlie was singing Oranges and Lemons when the was shot to his death.

  19. Personally, I don’t think it’s a fair court martial. When the soldiers didn’t let Tommo be Charlie’s witness, I thought it was unfair because Tommo knew the truth but sergeant Hanley told a different story so they believed him even if it wasn’t true. In the end, sergeant Hanley died and so did Charlie so now, Tommo has to take care of the family.

  20. 1. I think Charlie’s court martial is unfair because the other men died and Charlie didn’t ,I also feel bad for the people that lost their lives .I don’t really like wars because they’re only because they have fights between countries and because they’re sacrificing their lives for us just because of a fight . I wish I could stop the wars from happening. I think at the end Charlie didn’t deserve to die because he did love his brother and Tommo did love him back but Tommo did still lose his brother Charlie and that was that.

  21. 1. 2/1) I think that taking away Charlie’s life by a court martial was unfair. As Charlie was badly hurt, he couldn’t move so what was the point of going out anyway if he was just going to be shot. Although, there is another half of me that says well he should have listened to sergeant Hanley. I know this is getting a little long but I think it was unfair to kill Charlie with his new born little Tommo and he did nothing wrong and sergeant Hanley should only give court marshals to people that actually deserve it! ☺♥

  23. Yes and no. I don’t think this is fair because Charlie did not get a person to back him up and also because maybe he should have got punished because but not killed. I also think that he should not have got punished because it was an unfair command. Although he stayed with his brother, he didn’t follow Horrible Hanley’s instrutions.

  24. 1) I do not think that Charlie’s court martial was fair. Bravely, he was just looking out for his little brother Tommo. Although, his court martial a little fair he did disobey orders even if it was for a good cause other the solders may not see it that way and do the same thing. Speaking on my side now, Charlie dose have a kid at home that he will never see little Tommo again.

  25. Q1. Charlie’s court martial was unfair, because sergeant Hanley gave orders to a suicide mission, and Sergeant Hanley didn’t commit to his own order.
