Fritz - What Would You Do?

"There's no future here for me.  I'm leaving East Berlin tonight.  I found a place near the Spree that isn't well guarded.  I can run for the water and swim across before I'm seen.  I wanted you to know so you can explain to Mama.  It's not fair, but it is the best I can do.  I will not join their military.  Eventually I'll think like they do.  And I will not let them ruin my life." Fritz's note to Gerta.

1) In complete sentences, list all the reasons why Fritz is determined to risk his life and escape over the wall and across the dangerous River Spree to West Berlin.  What are the factors pushing him away from East Berlin; what are the factors attracting him to West Berlin?

2)Then, tell what you would do in his place.  Would you stay or would you go?  Why?  If you chose to go, then what about your mother and younger sister?  If you chose to stay, how would you shape your future.

Remember, COPS, complete sentence answers.

  4. 1. Fritz reasons are there is no future for him no jobs will take him in he will have to join the Starze in a couple of weeks and he broke up with his girlfriend, the push factors are again no jobs bad payments less freedom and the starze, and the pull factors for west berlin are good jobs and payment more freedom.
    2. I would go because there would be no future for me and everything is dark and gloomy and on the other side everything is in color happiness is everywhere it would give me my best chance, I don’t have a little sister so I would take my mom and escape with her. I would try to get into a good school get some money from a job and see how far my family can go with it until it’s kill or be killed.

  13. Fritz is determined to leave because he doesn’t want to go to the army. The factors that push him from East Berlin to West Berlin are: he has family in West Berlin that he wants to see, he wants to be free from the laws and the Stasi and he doesn’t believe in what East Berliners are doing.
If I was in his place I would probably go and take the rest of my family with me. I would go because I don’t like what they’re doing.

  15. 1. The reasons that Fritz is determined to risk his life and escape over the wall and across the dangerous River Spree to West Berlin are that he wants freedom and he does not want to go to the military and he felt bad for his neighbor because he never got to go to West Berlin only his family, and he wants to be with his brother and father, and he wants a better job plus, he wants more food and money.
    2. If I were in his place, I would stay because there is too much risk because of the Stasi. I would try to get a good job and try to be successful in life.
