"But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had-well, this was the part that he couldn't adequately understand-the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air...Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere."
1)What do you think happened?
2)If the apple did change, then how, in your opinion did it change? What was different? Why? Explain your thoughts using any evidence from the book (page number) about what you think happened.
Remember:
Draft your answers in MS WORD. Edit them for clarity and details; PROOF READ them for COPS before copying them into the blog editor and posting them.
1.I think what happened was that the apple spun in the air, but he didn’t know you don’t see the same side of the apple when you throw it, or maybe he thought it was changing cause the apple was two different colours.
ReplyDelete2.I think if it really did change then it was just rotating or there was a light pointed on the apple that would create it to shine and make it look like the apple was changing.
-Trinity
I like your sensible, scientific answer, Trinity. It's pretty hard to see a moving object in any detail until it's in your hand. I wonder if he should have taken a bite to see if tasted like an apple?
Delete1. I think what happened was that he just doesn’t understand that the apple spins when its being thrown, so you don’t see the same side the entire time, and that maybe part of the apple is red and the other part is yellow so when it spun, the color changed from red to yellow.
ReplyDelete2. If the apple did change then in my opinion, either the color changed, or the light changed, it could also be that the rotation changed.
Shirinaa
Another scientist - a very logical answer. It could be, as you say, Sharinaa, that he doesn't understand that the apple is rotating as it flies through the air.
Delete1. I think what happened may have just been that Jonas was imagining the apple changing, in other words, he could’ve been hallucinating. It wasn’t major hallucination, if he was hallucinating at all, but it could simply be so. It seems farfetched, but in the setting of the book there doesn’t seem to be any magic, or any differences at all to reality. Jonas could’ve been imagining the apple changing because it may have been his mind tricking him because he was hungry, and wanted to eat the apple, so he would’ve taken it home. I have a feeling my guess will not be correct, because it just seems a bit bland and wouldn’t add much to the book; it’d just be a pointless piece of story to make sure the book had enough pages for its intended age group. But as of right now, I can’t think of much else that could be happening, because like I said, there doesn’t seem to be magic in this book, and if there was magic it wouldn’t make sense at all, unless the book had a reason why there’d be magic.
ReplyDelete2. If the apple did change, I wouldn’t have an idea why. It would seem all too strange if the apple did actually change. Unless there was a reasonable answer on why the apple could’ve changed, I would still question it. I’m still unsure on why the apple was even in the book. But I’m sure that it will have to do with something crucial to the story, maybe a secret, or just maybe even finding out the hippos, bears and elephants do or did in fact exist! But who knows what could come from that singular apple?
-Ada
A very well thought out answer, Ada. Intriguing! You are right, that apple is the first sign of something big to come...keep listening :)
Delete1. I think Jonas was just paranoid about if he gets caught will he get in trouble or maybe he has some sort of super powers.
ReplyDelete2.i don’t think it changed I think he just thought it changed because of the wind or maybe it just turned funny.
Carson .P ;)
Super powers...you might be closer to the truth than you think...
DeleteJonas had noticed something new something that he did not know about that nobody could see only he could see and learn that everything is different and never the same it is not being controlled over how it changes but it does it by its self and made its own life.
ReplyDelete2. The apple changed it size shape and color and made it look like something entirely new not yet seen by eyes and that is why it was different.
Jaeger I-H
I think you are saying that he can see into other dimensions, Jaeger? Maybe...
Delete1. I think that the apple got hit by the light and changed in the air, but when he looked at it in his hands it was a sphere.
ReplyDelete2. If the apple did change i still think it was the light that changed it.
Sarah
Wow, I didn't know I had such a rational, scientific class. Like you, Sarah, a lot of students are going for the sensible option that the apple didn't change, and that it was Jonas who imagined what he saw. Good for you!
Delete1) I think that Jonas’s eyes are different then almost everybody’s eyes.
ReplyDelete2)I think it was just Jonas’s eyes because there is only three of the people in the community that have different eyes so maybe it is just that it is Jonas’s eyes playing tricks on him.
Cole B.
Well done, Cole...you come up with some evidence which might support why he sees the apple differently. Well done!
Delete*1) I think it was just Jonas’s eyes playing tricks on him.
ReplyDelete*2) I think the reason that nobody else saw it was because of Jonas’s eyes. In the book it said that only three people in the community have pale eyes like Jonas. In my opinion the apple could have changed because of the light and the shadow or the apple could have spun and Jonas could have thought he saw something else.
Alssa
Good thinking, Alyssa. I wonder why his eyes are a different colour, and if that is significant? (PS I like the way you have shortened your name: who needs those pretend vowels anyway? :-)
Delete1. I think that it has something to do with his eyes being a light instead of being brown. Or that he is special and he is going to get a special job.
ReplyDelete2. I think that the apple was a vision or something and that it was meant for Jonas.
Kate
Nice connection, Kate. I wonder if Gabe will be affected the same way as Jonas?
DeleteI think Jonas doesn’t see anything special, I think all he sees is the rotation of the apple. What I mean is I think all Jonas sees is the other side of the apple and maybe it’s just his mind tricking him to see something more interesting because he is bored.
ReplyDeleteIf the apple did “change” then I think maybe the Giver is pulling some kind of trick on Jonas to see if he is worthy of learning from the Giver. Or maybe it’s the Giver trying to somehow warn him of something Jonas doesn’t know about.
Flora.S
I like your reference to the Giver, and the idea that he is testing Jonas. I wonder who he is, and how he is connected to Jonas?
Delete1. I think when Jonas threw the apple the sun was bright so the sun might have made Jonas is vision different because his eyes are different than most of the community.
ReplyDelete2. I think the apple’s colour change a tiny bit because the sun might have made Jonas is vision different.
Daniel
Another pragmatist! (Dictionary :-) A very logical reason for why Jonas thought it changed outside while throwing with Asher, but why he didn't see it change inside. Good thinking, Daniel.

1) I think that Jonas’s eyes tricked him.
2) I think that the apple change shape and size Because he said it was the same apple so if it changed colour it would not be the same apple 11 TO 26.
bodie.C
Why do you think his eyes tricked him? What do we know about his eyes?
Delete1 Since Jonas has problems with his hand connation problems.
ReplyDelete2 The air has to do with it.
Carter
It's not Jonas who has problems with hand-eye coordination; it's Asher who needs to practise.
Delete1.I think that the apple didn’t change and that his eyes tricked him.
ReplyDelete2.In my opinion, I think that the apple changed its size and shape. I think that because it says,”the same size and shape:a perfect sphere.”
Patricia L.
Confusing. #1 and #2 contradict each other. Did you omit the word "don't" in #2 before the word "think"?
Delete1) I think what happened was Joneses eyes were thinking that the apple changed.
ReplyDelete2) It is because in the book it said that only three people in the community have light eyes and the rest have dark and jones has light eyes so that is why he must have thought it.
ANIKET
A good connection, Aniket. But did he see it or think it?
Delete1. I think that Jonas has some sort of EXTRODENARRY imagination like he could probably become an Elder or something like that because of his shmartness or something but I think he imagined it.
ReplyDelete2. Same thing it was probably his imagination.
-Tallulah ^-^
A good point, Tallulah. With his extraordinary imagination, he would make an excellent elder.
Delete1.I think what happened was it may be that it was just Jonas imagination when the apple spun he may thought that there was something different with the apple.
ReplyDelete2.If the apple did change my opinion the color change or the light flash on the apple and make it different.
Celina
Good thinking, Celina. I wonder why Asher didn't see it?
Delete1) I think that Jonas doesn’t understand that the apple is spinning when it is being thrown.
ReplyDelete2) In my opinion I think that the color changed when the apple spun around because the apple was kind of yellow too.
Aana
1) So what do I think happened, I think that the apple did change because Jonas is the only one that can see it or at least we know that Asher can’t see it because he didn’t notice anything change. I feel like the book is trying to make us think that he was hallucinating but what if he wasn’t what if the apple did change and he was the only one that can see it because we already know that Jonas is kind of different not just cause the colour of his eyes but because he acts different I am trying to think out of the box because the apple probably changed and Jonas is the only one that can see it because there is something special about him and that his life and him being able to see things that other people can’t is going to be different and there is going to be some advantages and some disadvantages.
ReplyDelete2) If the apple changed I feel like it didn’t really switch the shape or size but it might have been a message I don’t know who but I feel like someone is trying to make him think hard to find that person and that person might tell him the truth because I don’t think that the place they live is telling the truth about everything. I think that there is some secrets being hidden and when Jonas finds that person he is going to learn the truth and I also believe that the people aren’t released I think they are killed and that there is other secrets we don’t know about that the people is trying to hide from us. I can’t remember the page number because I was trying to think out of the box
Luke
1.) As Jonas (an Eleven) was throwing the apple that he took from the recreation center fruit basket with Asher he noticed something odd and different about the apple when it was gliding through the air. Jonas would follow the apple with his eyes when the apple was in the air and watch the apple change slightly, so Jonas took the apple home and examined it but nothing seemed out of the ordinary with apple. Announcements came on that were directed at Jonas reminding Elevens not to hoard food.
ReplyDelete2.) I believe that it has something to do with Jonas’s eyes. Only very few people have his lightly colored eyes and I think that it means something. Maybe Jonas is able to access some sort of “power” where he can see things differently or maybe into the past or future. Jonas just has to be taught how to use his “powers”. Possibly the receiver could teach him because the book is called “The Giver” and in the book it mentioned something about a receiver so I think Jonas is going to be the Giver.
Erika.F
1) I think it was just the light shining in Jonas’s eyes, which reflected on the apple. I think the apple may have changed in the light.
ReplyDelete2) If the apple had changed I think Asher is keeping a big secret from Jonas because he is afraid that Jonas might not be his friend if Asher tells him that he has a secret power.
Brooke.I
1.At first I thought what happened to the apple was just Jonas imagination playing tricks on him. Then I thought it over some more and came up with a different theory. Maybe the apple looking weird when thrown and the fact that it could only be seen by Jonas as Asher didn’t say he see anything. The apple could have been a sign that something big, dangerous or very important could be coming Jonas’s way.
ReplyDelete2.In my opinion if the apple did change from Jonas ‘s hand from when it was gilding through the air the change was that Jonas may not understand that the apple spins while he is throwing it. It could also occur that one side of the apple is a darker shade of red. The point of which the light are the sun may have reflected on the apple or maybe Jonas’s eye.
Anrika.H
1. I think there is a bond between Jonas and Asher or Jonas has a bond when he throws things or exchanges an object with another person who creates an optical illusion or a chemical reaction which changes the objects appearance.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion the apple did change but only Jonas could see it and possibly Gabe because I think they are related and have a special bond of creation. Possibly what Jonas and/or Gabe wants to imagine appears in their mind’s eye which is why only Jonas can see the change.
