The Giver - Rule #8

In Jonas' new work package, one piece of paper outlined the 8 rules he had to live by.  Rule#8 stated "You may lie."

  1. Why does Jonas find the instruction about lying so disturbing? What would you feel/think if you were given this "permission"? (3 Sentences minimum.)
  2. Which rule from his list of 8 rules do you like best?  How would you use it?(3 Sentences minimum.)
  3. Which rule do you like the least.  Why?  (3 Sentences minimum.)
If you can't remember the EXACT wording of the rules, then grab a book to help you (page#68)

Remember: Draft your answers in MS WORD. Edit them for clarity and details; PROOF READ them for COPS before copying them into the blog editor and posting them.

  1. 1. It wouldn’t matter to me because it says you’re allowed to lie. I would think it would be ok to lie because the rules say I have permission to do so. I think Jonas finds lying disturbing because he has never lied before and his old rules said no lying.
    2. I think I would like the lying rule because if you heard something disturbing and you’re friend asked, “Hey did you hear something” I’d be nope.
    3. I think I don’t like the rule when you can’t tell ANT one about your training.

  2. 1, Jonas finds the instruction about being able to lie so disturbing because he has never ever lied in his life and if any one did they would get punished and letting anyone know what he is doing is a first to him because everyone tells the truth there.
2, my favorite out of all the rules Jonas get is that you may ask anyone a question and you will get an answer.
3, my least favorite of all the rules that Jonas has to follow is that from this moment you are prohibited from dream telling because you should be able to tell your family about your dreams together because you could hear the experience your family has had in the world there minds have put them in and to make there adventure in that world better than it already is also I think I know why he is not able to tell his dreams because he might dream of the memories he has receives and he is not able to tell anyone about his training and also I might be banished from the community like the last lady or his family might think he is crazy.

  3. 1. Jonas finds the rule about lying so disturbing because he’s been taught to never, ever lie. For 12 years of his life, lying was a punishable thing to do, and now he has the power to do it whenever he feels like it! Now, if I had the free will to lie, in a world where lying was a terrible thing to do, I would probably use it. I most likely would be quite disturbed by the idea of it, but I would use that to my advantage. If there’s something you don’t want to tell, just lie right out of it. Lying isn’t right, but in that sort of world where nobody can tell if you’re truthful or not, it’d be kind of cool.
    2. I like lots of the rules, but the one I like most is probably “You can ask any question”. Yet again, it would still be shocking, as you were taught to never ask many, many questions. But now you can ask anything, and get an answer. The worst part is, you never really know if the person is lying or not, especially if they’re 12 and up. You couldn’t ask the person, “Do you have the free will to lie as a rule for your assignment?” because if they did, they could simply lie and say “No”. I’m not sure how I would use this rule, but I would find a way to use it. Maybe I’d use it for gathering information. Not going to lie, but I would more than likely use that rule unfairly, knowingly or not.
    3. My least favorite rule is defiantly “You cannot tell anyone about your training”. It would be absolutely terrible to have to live by that rule! And because the training is what you’ll be doing for most of your life, you couldn’t tell anyone about it. While all your friends are talking about the things they do for training, you just have to stand around and listen. I think that rule should be taken away, or maybe even just less strict. Maybe you could just talk about your training, but not about all the things that could affect people’s view on the way they live right now. You could even lie about what it’s like, you could tell people about color, but say color isn’t that pretty or interesting.

    1. - #1: But, would you feel like you're doing something wrong in lying? Lying is in a way, good, but wouldn't you have this weight for you that you can't tell them?

  4. 1. Jonas probably finds the instruction of lying so disturbing because, if somebody finds out that he was lying, then they might break their trust with Jonas and then once everybody breaks their trust with Jonas, then he won’t have anybody left to support him. If I got this then I would feel like the odd one out. I would think that the rules are trying to make me the bad one.
    2. My favorite rule out of all of them would have to be part 2 of number 3. This is that you can ask any question to any person and get an answer. I would use this by asking any question nobody has answered and always receive an answer.
    3. My least favorite is number 4. It says that you cannot share your training with anyone. I do not like that because, all I would want to do is do my training, and at least share the first few weeks of training. But if not, then when some big thing happens, then at least share that with my parents.

  5. 1~ I think Jonas finds the instruction about lying so disturbing because he’s not used to lying. If it’s not a rule that applies to him he doesn’t have to follow it. It’s not like he’s breaking a rule or anything but it’s probably a habit to be honest if you’ve have lied in your life.
2~My favorite rule from ‘The list of eight rules’ is lying. I think lying could be useful if you heard something rude about your friend and they ask you if you’ve heard gossip and you could say no if you don’t want their feelings hurt. It’s not really good to lie because you’ll probably end up telling more lies to cover that lie.
3~At the same time I do like the rule of lying because it can get you out of a problem. Lying can also cause more problems than you started with. Lying is a double edged sword. In the end its better to tell the truth, but you never know who’s watching you. You could be a role-model to your younger siblings or little children and they would see that you were lying so they thought it was okay if they lied.

  6. 1.Jonas finds the instruction about lying disturbing because everyone older or the same age could have been given the permission to lie, so people could be lying to him. I would feel the same way Jonas feels because it is pretty weird and I would very curious too. If I was given the rule I don’t know if I would lie or not, but sometimes I do lie so maybe I would lie.
2.I like rule 6. I like rule 6 because you are only receiving pain that isn’t actually real. But if the pain lasted longer than a couple days I would probably ask if that was normal, and if maybe he would make an exception for me to get some pain medicine.
3.I don’t like rule 5. I don’t like rule 5 because I like telling my dreams especially if they are weird, scary or if they are normal. And other people would be telling their dreams and I’d be sitting there without any belonging in the conversation.

  7. 1. Jonas finds the instruction about lying so disturbing because he wasn’t allowed to lie before and he wonders if any other parents are allowed lie. I would feel curious because I want to know if my parents can lie.
    2. The rule I like is that he doesn’t have to tell his dream because when I have a dream I would want to keep it to myself.
    3. The rule I don’t like is that he can’t tell his friends because I would want to tell them how much fun it was.

  8. Jonas felt that the instruction about lying was disturbing because I think in their community or families they tell each other everything. If I were Jonas I would chose to lie because it didn’t exactly say you had to lie it said you may lie. Jonas felt that the instruction about lying was disturbing because I think in their community or families they tell each other everything. I don’t like to lie unless I haft to.
The rule I like the best is rule number 3. I like that rule because I can ask the giver anything ad I will get an answer. I would use it for asking what will happen in training.
I don’t like rule number 4. I don’t like rule number 4 because it would be hard not to tell anyone about what you’re doing in your training. I also think that lots of people would want to know what you’re doing in your training.

  9. 1)I think Jonas finds lying disturbing because his community shares most things out loud, and he is afraid that he will stand out if he does lie. If I was given the permission to lie I would lie if I had too. I would feel uncomfortable lying but would do it anyway.

  10. 1. I think that Jonas find the instruction disturbing because if somebody finds out, they might break their trust with Jonas. I would feel really bad because if I did that probably nobody would trust me again,
    2. The rule I like is that he doesn’t have to tell his dream because sometimes in the morning people ask me what was your dream and I am too tired to answer.
    3. My least favorite rule is number 4 because it said that you can not share your training with anyone else.

  11. 2) My favorite rule is #3 because Jonas can ask any question and get an answer without anyone knowing. I would use it by asking about the release before the giver showed Jonas.
    3) I like rule #8 the least because I don’t like to lie. I feel uncomfortable if I do lie because it is not the right thing to do.

  12. 1. That he can’t dream tell and he can’t tell the truth. I would feel entrust worthy. I think I wouldn’t be able to because I don’t like to lie.
    2. I like #7 because I don’t want to die. I don’t know how to use this rule. And I would not want to die because it would be a lucky position in Jonas’s perspective.
    3. I dislike #8 because people could get framed if you said something wrong. It would be hard from not telling your parents the amazing memory’s you have. And you couldn’t lie about seeing your dad kill a child.

    1. Maybe that's why they call it releasement, as in releasement of the soul.

  14. The reason that Jonas finds lying so disturbing is because all his life he has been told not to lie. Also I would feel good and disturbed. The reason I would feel good was because I could keep personal things to myself. The reason I would feel disturbed is that even if I tried not to I would try to keep things from my parents
2i like you can lie. Because it could make it so lots of good things happen to me. But there would be consequences like somebody figuring you out.so it would be a double edge sword.
3i don’t like that you can be rude. Also about that rule I don’t like that you can ask any question. That rule could people highly offend so that’s why I don’t like that rule.
